Food Friday: The House

If there is any Food Friday post you must bookmark and remember, it is this one. Ladies and gents, today we are going to talk about The House, which is quite possibly my number one favorite restaurant of them all.  An Asian Fusion restaurant located in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco probably wouldn't be your first choice of restaurants to try in an area predominantly known for its tasty Italian food. Who goes to North Beach for Asian cuisine? It sounds a bit risky... kind of like ordering steak in a restaurant known for its seafood, right? Normally, I would say yes, but in this case, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Last Friday was the mister's birthday, so I wanted to surprise him to something special. The House was all that and more. When we sat down for dinner at 6PM it was already a full house, which is always a good sign in my book. We received our menus, along with a complimentary pickled cucumber appetizer, and struggled over what to order because literally everything sounded so delicious. (You can imagine how much harder the decision making process was once the waitress told us about the specials for the night.) What we quickly found out, however, was that absolutely no item off the menu would be a bad choice.

We started with a Hamachi Sashimi appetizer special and Oysters on the half shell with a spicy cilantro mignonette. The mister doesn't normally like oysters and I don't normally like hamachi, so the fact that both of us yearned for more long after we were done with the dishes is a testament to how amazing The House is. The oysters were extremely fresh and the spicy garnish added a flavor worthy of all taste buds to try. For our main courses, I ordered the Warm Wasabi House Noodles with Angus Flatiron Steak and the mister got the Angus Ribeye Steak with Homemade Teriyaki and Toasted Garlic Butter. My dish was absolutely exquisite. I can't even explain how much flavor was in each bite. The mister loved his dish as well. One minute I was looking down at my plate to concentrate on my food, and next thing I know, I look up and his plate was practically wiped clean! For dessert, we shared the Pumpkin-Macadamia Pie special. Pumpkin is one of my favorite things to eat, so being able to have it during its off season is always a treat. Lightly warmed with a dollop of whipped cream on the top and macadamia nuts hidden like treasures within, the pie was a perfect end to our delicious meal.

A meal at The House can best be described as bittersweet. You're so, so happy as you eat your meal because everything is just so darn good, but once you're done, you're a little sad because all you want is more.
