Food Friday: Brunch at Bluestem

Bluestem Brasserie 1 Yerba Buena Lane

You've seen Bluestem on my feed a handful of times. From the cake to most recently, the toast (which, you'll hear more about after a few scrolls down!). So, it's about time I do a proper post on the place. I've been going to Bluestem since way back when (exhibit a). It's located between the Fiancial District and the mall, so has always been a restaurant I suggest when people need somewhere to go before/after shopping, or when they need to host a client dinner. The restaurant itself is large enough to lend itself to many guests, so it's even great for larger get-togethers (they have a private space upstairs!). But, don't let the big space fool ya - it's homey as hell in there and the restaurants' owners are incredibly warm and thoughtful. Hence, Bluestem remains as one of the few restaurants that I regard deeply. The restaurant often switches up the menu, molding its dishes to whatever is in season, and this time around I was able to try their new brunch offerings.

Brunch is and may always be my favorite meal of the day. I tend to favor savory dishes over the sweets, which often surprises people, because I think I'm supposed to always order pancakes or something? But in all seriousness, it's always a tough call, unless chicken and waffles are on the menu, in which case it's a done deal. So, of course, as soon as I saw Bluestem's bacon waffles and chicken on the menu, my brain sort of shut down and I couldn't see anything else. Luckily for me, Stacy, one of the owners of the restaurant, was gracious enough to bring out a sampling of some of the brunch appetizers, so I had a little nibble of everything I may have normally just passed up!

Some things to always order if you're doing brunch right at Blumstem - first, the chicken liver toast. The chicken liver toast is always on the menu, but the topping change seasonally. This season's version is one I still dream of - it's drizzled with lemon and topped with pomegranate seeeds and pistachio. Order it and don't share if you don't have to, ha! Also a huge fan of the avocado toast - it's simple and easy, but filling in all the right ways. Next up, don't skimp out on the mac and cheese - you can share this one - it's rich and creamy and deserves your "mmm's" upon every bite. Not shown above (probably because it was already consumed, ha!) is the flatbread with tomato jam. If you're on the fence about ordering this one, don't be. It's warm, it's delicious, it's delightful, and you've gotta do it. Finally, the star of the show, the chicken and waffles! Not just any waffles, no. BACON WAFFLES. With maple cream cheese! Yes, it's as good as it sounds. I went over the top and ordered a bacon-infused bloody mary, but believe me, that was worth it, too.

Special thanks to the Bluestem team for all of the hospitality. The pleasure is always mine (and my tummy's).
