Food Friday: Bob's Steak and Chop House

Bob's Steak and Chop House 500 California Street

There are some great combinations in life, classics, if you may. Peanut butter and jelly, wine and cheese, spaghetti and meatballs - the list goes on, my friends. One pairing that I haven't had for ages, but can never say no to is surf and turf. Ask yourselves - when is the last time you sat down for some delicious steak and lobster? If it's been too long to recall, I'm hoping this post will help change that.

A few weeks ago, Bob's Steak and Chops, hailing from the bigger is better state, invited me and Derrick to dine with them. Admittedly, I'm not so great at cooking red meat at home, so any chance I get to order steak while out is a done deal. We jumped at the chance and as soon as we arrived, we knew we had made a great choice. Bob's really takes the "bigger is better" mentality to heart - from their gracious wine pours, to their giant loaves of bread to their even bigger dinner servings - it's all big and it's all better in the eyes of two seemingly small people with deceivingly large stomachs.

Derrick and I took ages to browse the menu. We couldn't decide between all the delicious-sounding cuts of meat. Ribeye, Filet Mignon, New York Strip? It all sounded good to us. It wasn't until our charming serve, Scott shared the specials to us that we knew, almost instantly, what to pick. Surf and turf! But before that, we had to order some calamari and wine to start. We each ended up getting the Fess Parker Syrah, which was incredibly tasty. When our plates came out, we were both quite pleased. We ate and ate and loved every bite. While the lobster tail and steak were obviously the stars of the show, the mashed potatoes and asparagus sides were phenomenal as well. We couldn't leave without a nibble of dessert - the brownie sundae - which, in retrospect, might have set us each over the edge. Although Derrick and I like to think that no dish stands a chance against us, the brownie sundae is best served for parties of five or more (which we learned the hard way).

Everything at Bob's was a delight - the service, the ambiance, the food - it was such a treat to dine here. Special thanks to Bob's for graciously hosting us - we couldn't have had a better time!
